SUDHA CHANDRAN – A WOMAN OF WILL POWER

INDIA’S  “WONDER GIRL”, THE “DANCING PEACOCK”

She is listed among the TOP TEN EXTAORDINARY PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, along with all-time greats like Hellen Keller, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Vincent Van Gogh and Stephen Hawking by LISTVERSE.com. Macmillan Ltd in their new book “KNOCK OUT CHALLENGES” has included a chapter on her.

Sudha Chandran

Her inspirational story has entered into school textbooks in various States of India.  She had proved that no handicap, however great, however formidable, could quell the human spirit on its journey to greatness.  She is none other than `India’s Wonder Girl’, the `Dancing Peacock’ (Natya Mayuri), SUDHA CHANDRAN.

Early Life:

She is the only child of late Thangam, a musician,  and Mr K D Chandran, former Dy.Library Director of USIS, a well-known personality in Mumbai’s socio-cultural scene for over five decades.

A prodigious instinctive dancer by birth, Sudha was initiated to dance by her mother when she was hardly four.   She completed the course and did her successful arangetram(the traditional graduation recital and the beginning of the performance career of the dancer) at the age of nine.

Tragedy

Sudha lost her right leg due to an amputation after a road accident near Trichy in South India in May 1981. Yet she picked up courage and got a prosthetic limb fixed by Ramon Magsasay Award winner Dr. P K Sethi.    With the help of the now world-famous “Jaipur foot”

She practiced her art again, becoming one of the most highly acclaimed dancers of the Indian subcontinent, stunning the lovers of dance and dance critics who could not find any difference between her past footwork and the present. The media all over the world wrote millions of words about her flesh-tearing, blood-oozing practice sessions with the artificial limb, human endurance, grit, determination and the most superior kind of will power, the likes of which have no parallel in the history of the world.

Awards and Appreciation

She is a prominent cine/TV/stage actor (HUM HAIN RAHI PYAR KE, TERE MERE SAPNE, CHINA GATE, PUKAR, SHARARAT, HAR DIL JO PYAR KAREGA, JUNOON, GHAR JAMAI, etc).

She won the 1985 National Award for her superb portrayal in her first film “MAYURI” which was based on her own life story. In 1999 she won the Best Actress Award (State Award) of Government of Gujarat for her excellent performance in her first Gujarati feature film.

She is back in the dance field by establishing a Dance Academy (SUDHA CHANDRAN’S “NACHE MAYURI” DANCE ACADEMY).  She is happily married to Mr. Ravikumar Dang, former associate director of many Hindi feature films/TV serials/documentary films. At present, he is the Executive Director of the Dance Academy, which has branches all over Mumbai.

She is associated with several voluntary organizations working for the welfare of the disabled.  She is the vice-chairperson of National Association of Disabled Enterprises (NADE).  She is also a member of the Advisory Board of Witty Kids High School at Malad in Mumbai.   She is a much sought-after speaker and counselor in professional bodies.

She is looked as a ray of hope and an inspiration for millions of physically challenged men and women all over the world.  She has become an eternal beacon of the indomitable human spirit.

When faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges and difficulties in life, one could say:   “Look at Sudha Chandran…draw inspiration from her”.   That is her unique contribution to humanity through her life.
